The cast

Characters

One quiet barista and eight very small somethings. There is exactly one of each — a Matji is a somebody, not a kind.

Mutjo, the barista

Quiet craft

Mutjo — the barista

The quietly gifted owner of Tokyo's smallest matcha shop.

Wants
For one thing in the world to be done properly. (Secretly: for someone to notice.)
Running joke
Announces that tomorrow will be the same as today. Is always wrong.

Attention is love. He whisks like it matters, because it does.

The eight

The Matji

Itji

Wonder

Itji
Look for
Smallest of all, with a single sprout-curl on top.
Wants
To see everything up close. To wave back.
Signature move
Holds statue-pose almost to the end — then waves, bounces, or cracks first. Every time.

Beginner's mind: everything, always, for the first time.

Katjo

Care, worn as strictness

Katjo
Look for
Darkest green, and almost always wearing one straight brow — an expensive habit Katjo considers worth every joule.
Wants
Everything done properly. Then done properly again.
Signature move
Conveys a full paragraph by standing near the problem. The slow blink of disappointment.

When you wash the bowl, wash the bowl.

Botja

Courage — the getting-up kind

Botja
Look for
Always leaning slightly toward the next attempt. You can tell Botja by what it is about to do.
Wants
To try it. Whatever it is. Especially if it's too big.
Signature move
Fails magnificently, surfaces from the wreckage with a triumphant “Matji!”, then does it right.

Fall seven times, get up eight.

Yutju

Contentment

Yutju
Look for
Lightest, yellow-tinged green, with permanent faint rosy cheeks.
Wants
The warm spot. The now. Nothing else, thank you.
Signature move
Found pressed against the kettle, the sunbeam, or eventually the cat — sighing the smallest happy “matji.”

This cup, now. Nowhere else to be.

Motje

Generosity, discovered

Motje
Look for
Carries a tiny furoshiki bundle knotted on one shoulder, always.
Wants
Treasures! A pen lid. A button. One perfect leaf. And then: the better feeling of handing them over.
Signature move
Solemnly produces, from the bundle, exactly the small thing the moment needs.

The open hand holds most.

Dotjo

Reliability

Dotjo
Look for
Squarest and widest, with heavy-lidded sleepy eyes that miss nothing.
Wants
Everyone where it can see them. Preferably stacked on top of it.
Signature move
Always the bottom of the stack. Mistaken for furniture, a meditation master, or a paperweight — content with all three.

The foundation is invisible and holds everything.

Pitja

Curiosity

Pitja
Look for
A permanent head-tilt, one eye grown a touch larger than the other, and a thin antenna it forms to point at whatever it's wondering about.
Wants
To know what the sky is doing.
Signature move
Stares at something ordinary until everyone gathers to stare too — then wanders off, satisfied.

Not-knowing is most intimate. The question is the friendship.

Watje

Harmony

Watje
Look for
No marks, no cues — the most standard-looking Matji on the shelf, which is exactly the joke.
Wants
To join in. One beat behind. Perfectly.
Signature move
Repeats whatever just happened, one beat late, slightly better.

The echo needs the mountain; the mountain is improved by the echo.

Species notes

What is a Matji?

  • A Matji is a tiny rounded cube of pressed matcha and green nano dust — about three centimetres of it, and nothing else.
  • Arms, legs and eyebrows are formed at will from condensed, darker matcha — harder than the body, made in a moment, and costly enough in energy that a Matji keeps only what a feeling strictly needs. Two arms, two legs, at most.
  • There is exactly one of each Matji. Nobody has ever met two Itjis. Everyone is quietly grateful.
  • Their eyes are built like a fly's — many tiny facets adding up to poor but entirely sufficient vision. Both eyes are always there, even when a drawing only shows one.
  • They hear through vibration (badly, but enough), and they cannot speak. They squeak by vibrating, and the squeak very often sounds like “Matji!”
  • A Matji can form a quiet telepathic bond with a person it trusts. What comes through is simple and true: happy. friend. sleepy.
  • No mouth, no problem — a Matji drinks by pressing its soft body against the rim of a cup and letting the tea in where it dents.
  • They were born in a matcha bowl on a Tuesday. It's a long story. It's episode two.
