The bathhouse on Thursday
Steam, towels, and the discovery of the perfect napping humidity.
Yuki-san keeps the neighbourhood bathhouse with two rules posted at the door: wash before you soak, and no running on the wet floor. By Thursday evening she will consider a third.
The Matji arrive with Mutjo's delivery — a flask of cold matcha for the counter, a Thursday tradition — and encounter steam for the first time. Steam, it turns out, is their favourite weather. Warm. Soft. Excellent, if you are made of matcha, for the complexion.
They are found forty minutes later arranged along the high shelf above the baths like four small green towels, profoundly asleep. A bather points. Yuki-san looks up, consults her rules, and finds that technically nobody is running.
They wake at closing, deeply refreshed and slightly larger with the humidity, and fold towels by way of apology — badly, then, after one demonstration, with the terrifying precision of creatures who have found a new standard to uphold. Yuki-san pays them in warm milk. The third rule is never posted.
