Series 1 · Episode 6
The customer who saw
A regular almost notices a cup moving. Statues have never been so convincing.
Hara-san comes in every Thursday, orders the same thing, and reads the same newspaper. She is the shop's entire regular clientele, and its most dangerous observer.
This Thursday, her cup is two centimetres to the left of where she put it. Then four. Then a small green corner disappears behind the napkin holder.
She looks up. Four Matji stand on the counter in a row, perfectly still, with the fierce blank innocence of garden statues.
Hara-san regards them for a long moment. Then she folds her newspaper, finishes her matcha, and says, on her way out: “Tell the little ones the foam was excellent today.” Some customers, I am glad to report, see everything.
