Series 1 · Episode 5
One lump or four
The Matji discover they can stack. The shelves are never the same.
It begins as a practical matter: the top shelf, where the good tea lives, is four Matji high.
One climbs upon another. Then another. Then — click — something settles, and for a moment the tower is not four small Matji but one taller, steadier, slightly smug something.
They un-stack immediately and pretend it was nothing. But all afternoon Mutjo catches them practising behind the sugar jars: two here, three there, once — briefly, gloriously — all four.
The good tea is no longer safe. Nothing on any shelf is. Mutjo takes to keeping the truly good tea in his apron pocket, which the Matji consider both unsporting and correct.
