Series 1 · Episode 8
The delivery run
First delivery in the neighbourhood. The basket has supervisors now.
The shop's first-ever delivery order comes from Toda-san the bookbinder, three streets away. Mutjo packs the drink; the Matji pack themselves; and democracy being what it is, the bicycle basket sets off with a crew of four.
They take the work seriously: one watches the road, one watches the cup, one watches the sky for reasons it declines to explain, and the smallest sits pressed against the warm side of the cup as though it were a hot spring.
At every red light, pedestrians look into the basket. The Matji hold statue-pose. A child waves. The smallest — being, so to speak, only human — waves back.
Toda-san reports that the matcha arrived at the perfect temperature, and that she may have imagined the waving. Both things, we have agreed as a street, are allowed to be true.
