Series 1 · Episode 9
Closing time
Lights out. The matcha inventory goes mysteriously, adorably down.
Every night Mutjo counts the tins before he locks up. Every morning the numbers are wrong by a little.
He installs no cameras. He sets no traps. He was a man of science once, and knows better than to ruin a good mystery with evidence.
But some mornings the whisk is damp. Some mornings the bowls are warm. Some mornings four small shapes lie asleep in the tea-towel drawer in a neat row, wearing expressions of profound, suspicious innocence.
He has taken to leaving one tin unlabelled on the low shelf. Inventory on that tin is always, mysteriously, fine. Almost fine. Fine enough.
