The first family photo. Nobody looks at the camera except everyone.

It is Hara-san's idea. “You should have a picture,” she says, “for the wall. Shops need a picture.”
Mutjo sets the camera timer and takes his place behind the counter. The Matji arrange themselves — after negotiation — tallest to smallest, then smallest to tallest, then, with the timer beeping, in a formation best described as everywhere.
The photograph, when it develops, is technically a failure. Mutjo is mid-blink. One Matji is a green smear of motion. Another is upside down for reasons lost to history.
It goes on the wall in the good frame, above the diploma bowl. It is, everyone agrees, perfect.
