Hara-san's crossword
The pen goes missing. The investigation is thorough. The culprit is obvious and unrepentant.
Thursday, as always: Hara-san, her newspaper, her matcha, and the crossword pen — the good one, the one her late husband gave her, which she has never once lost.
It is missing. Hara-san does not panic. She folds the newspaper, looks over her glasses at the row of Matji on the counter, and waits. Statues. Perfect, blameless statues.
The investigation is brief. The pen is discovered behind the tea tins, where the smallest Matji has been employing it — as anyone would — as a practice whisk.
It is returned with ceremony and a smudge of matcha on the cap. Hara-san writes in the next answer, pauses, and delivers her verdict: “Seven across. Five letters. Guilty.” The culprit bounces once, entirely unrepentant. She lets it keep the pen lid on Thursdays.
